Program Portuguese Mills, preservation and future
Keynote: Jorge Miranda
Etnoideia; Rede Portuguesa de Moinhos; TIMS
Moinho de Castro Verde (Windmill)
Castro Verde – Alentejo, Southern Portugal
António Pezinho – Miller
David Marques – Vice Presidente Municipality of Castro Verde
The municipality has a strategy and practice of buying and preserving windmills, as well as hiring a miller to operate them. This way both the mills and the trade get a “live extension” but ageing and difficulties of succession are now on the table as the future has to be ensured.
Moinho dos Hipólitos (Windmill)
Óbidos, Southwest Central Portugal
Victor Hipólito – mill owner; miller’s grandson, Rede Portuguesa de Moinhos Activist
Victor is a Canadian citizen but cherish his roots very much so he refurbished and maintain his gradnfather’s mill. Being a distinct member of Portuguese Mills Network he organizes mill’s open participation “Moinhos Abertos” and engages the entire community in a festival around the mill. As a consequence, autochthone wheat is now growing every year, original bread recipes are back and a lot more. Victor is also challenged by the future of his mill.
Moinho da Redinha (Watermill)
Pombal, Central Northeast
Fernando Amaro – Miller
Marco Jesus Fernando Jesus – Miller’s sons
Carina Lourenço – Rede Portuguesa de Moinhos Activist
This grinding horizontal wheeled watermill and olive oil mill is one of the last commercially working mills in the region. The miller is still active but worried with the future of the mill and the lack of miller. His sons are abroad but strongly connected to the mill and together with the miller and Carina ‘s support they are looking for ways to preserve the mill in function.
